There had been a lot of talk regarding Scotland's Ricky Burns, his split from Frank Warren's promotions and his bankruptcy the decision to end his partnership with Warren brought about. Thankfully, for the two-weight World Champion the talk has now become much more positive.

His bout with Omar Figueroa raised some eyebrows beforehand. Would Burns still be able to box successfully after he had openly admitted the on-goings with Warren were disruptive outside, and inside of the ring and also struggling massively in his last few bouts against some inferior opponents. This could not be further from the truth though as the 32 year old Scot travelled to Texas and played his part in a brilliant fight on an excellent night of boxing.

Burns was impressive when boxing at range, as was expected, equally so, Figueroa was always trying to ruffle Burns up when up close on the inside. The only disappointment from the fight was the two incidents of point deductions for Ricky Burns, once in the eighth and secondly in the eleventh rounds, which caused social media outbursts towards referee on the night Laurence Cole, who was questionable at best.

The positives from this though are massive for Burns who was looking to rebuild his boxing career as well as coming to Texas to win against an unbeaten opponent. Although the win didn’t come, the fight was brilliant and could've been scored closer had those points not been deducted. However, the main thing which Burns will be happy to get off the back of the fight is recognition.

Eddie Hearn revealed to Scottish newspaper Herald Scotland late last week; "I have just spoken to the team who promoted the fight and they absolutely loved Ricky, and when you perform well on network TV over there it does a lot for your career." This sentiment was also echoed by Burns' manager Alex Morrison, who said to STV Sport; "Other promoters from the US watched Ricky’s fight in Texas on Saturday and they were impressed with what they saw of Ricky."

So, although Burns has only won once in his last five bouts, split from his promoter, been declared bankrupt and just travelled to Texas and lost by a margin, things are really starting to look up for the Scot again, at last!
