Well, that didn't take very long.
17 year old Brooke Henderson won the LPGA's Cambia Portland Classic in dominating fashion, winning by eight strokes and securing a place on the LPGA Tour in 2016.
After a third round 65 that gave Henderson a five shot lead heading into Sunday, she was never really challenged by the field. She extended her lead throughout the day, stretching it all the way out to nine strokes entering the final hole. She would end up shooting a 69 on Sunday to walk away with her first LPGA Tour title.
“It's amazing,” Henderson said after her win. “It's such an unbelievable thing, and I can't really, it's not even real‑life yet I don't think. I was just trying to play my own game, and I kept trying to get it to minus‑24 all day today, and I came up a little bit short, but I got the win, and I'm extremely excited.”
Henderson has been making headlines all season. She initially petitioned Commissioner Mike Whan to waive the rule that states players must be 18 or older in order to receive their LPGA Tour cards. Whan refused, but Henderson was still able to get into several tournaments via sponsor exemptions, and has played well, particularly in majors - she finished in the top 10 in both the Women's US Open and Women's PGA Championship. She also won on the Symetra Tour and earned her card on that Tour, giving her another avenue to win her LPGA Tour card for next season.
That will no longer be a concern.
With an invitation into next week's Canadian Pacific Women's Open, Henderson's limit on sponsor exemptions for the season ran out. Henderson had to Monday qualify in order to play in this week's event. Henderson became only the second player to Monday qualify and win the event, and the first to do so since 2000. With Henderson's limit on sponsor exemptions reached, she will need to once again petition Commissioner Whan for an LPGA Tour card if she wishes to play the rest of the 2015 season. She has yet to declare whether or not she will make that request.
Three players tied for second place. Thailand's Pornanong Phatlum shot four rounds in the 60's this week, giving her some confidence after entering this week on the heels of five straight missed cuts. Candie Kung of Taiwan, a four time winner on Tour who hasn't won in seven years, notched her best finish of the season. Korea's Ha Na Jang was the third player who finished tied for second. This was Jang's sixth top 10 of the season and the third time she finished as the runner up. She currently sits at ninth in the Race For The CME Globe and fourth in the stacked Rookie Of The Year Award race. She is currently the top ranked rookie without a victory.
Defending champion Austin Ernst finished in a tie for fifth place with last year's Women's British Open champion Mo Martin. Both players are just outside of qualifying for the Solheim Cup team. Neither have played on a Solheim Cup team before. They both tied with Azahara Munoz of Spain, who is slowly working her way back from injury.
Henderson becomes the third player after Lexi Thompson and Lydia Ko to win on the LPGA Tour before her 18th birthday. She also becomes the first Canadian to win on the LPGA Tour since Lori Kane in 2001.
