It is mid-season prospect list time as MLB.com released their midseason list of the Top 100 prospects in Major League Baseball, as well as the Top 20 in each team's individual farm system. The San Diego Padres placed four players in the prestigious group of young talent.

The four players who cracked MLB.com's Top 100 prospect list are: catcher Austin Hedges, pitchers Max Fried and Matthew Wisler and outfielder Hunter Renfroe.

Hedges, 21, has not had much success offensively in 2014, but he continues to win rave remarks for his defensive abilities, as well as his ability to handle a pitching staff. MLB.com hails Hedges as the "best defensive catcher in the minor leagues." His offensive game still needs refinement, but he could be ready by next season. For the season, Hedges is hitting .236 in Double-A.

Fried, 20, has had an injury-plagued season that has stunted his ascent through the Padres’ organization. He was originally slated to start the season at High-A, but has missed most of the year due to forearm soreness. Fried made a few starts in Low-A, but was shut down. Fried features three pitches that are expected to be above-average, with his curve being his greatest asset. Fried is a talented player, and the Padres are not going to risk anything when it comes to him.

Wisler, 21, is pretty close to being big league ready. He started the 2014 campaign in Double-A, where he was dominant. After six starts there, Wisler was promoted to Triple-A El Paso, and the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League. His numbers at El Paso are not particularly impressive, but he has pitched better after a horrendous start.

Wisler will touch the mid-90's with his fastball, and he also features a slider and a curve. His control is fantastic, as he walks just over two batters per nine innings. He should be in the mix for a spot in the rotation next season, and could even be called up in September. For the season, he has a 5.62 ERA in 16 Triple-A starts.

Hunter Renfroe was the Padres 1st round pick in the 2013 MLB Draft. He is a surprisingly athletic outfielder with a ton of power. Renfroe put on a prodigious power display in his time with the Lake Elsinore Storm (High-A) of the California League. While in Riverside County, Renfroe slammed 16 homers in 69 games, and was then promoted to Double-A San Antonio. Since being promoted, Renfroe has struggled a bit, but he is still very young for the league. Renfroe is considered to be a bit raw for a college draft pick, but his power could be a game-changer for the Padres.

The Padres have several prospects on the cusp of the top 100, including RHP Joe Ross, SS Trea Turner and many others. It will be interesting to see how all of these players progress through the Padres’ system.
