The Milwaukee Brewers have been one of the hottest teams in all of baseball to start the season but it seems like they’ve hit against a wall this week. After losing two against the St. Louis Cardinals, now they lost against the Pittsburgh Pirates after melting down completely in the last three innings.

All of this happened due to some late heroics from the Pirates’ offense. Pittsburgh’s bats came alive late and they scored nine runs between the seventh and the eighth inning on their way to an 11-2 win at PNC Park.

Milwaukee hit first though. Carlos Gomez scored on an RBI single from Aramis Ramirez in the top of the first but the Pirates answered instantly with two runs thanks to a two-run bomb from Andrew McCutchen. It was the first HR from the current NL MVP.

Ryan Braun scored on an RBI single from Jonathan Lucroy in the third to even things up at two after three innings. Everything was squared until the seventh when the Pirates broke the deadlock and open the floodgates on their way to create a huge differential late in the game.

The Pirates added three runs in the seventh. Pinch-hitter Josh Harrison connected a two-run shot to left field and later Starling Marte scored on an RBI groundout from McCutchen to give Pittsburgh a three-run lead. The lead would increase in the eighth where the Bucs added six more runs in a huge offensive explosion.

Gaby Sanchez kicked things off with a solo homer and Jordy Mercer added another run with an RBI double from Jose Tabata. Tabata later crossed home on an RBI single from Russell Martin and Pedro Alvarez closed everything with a three-run shot. Reliever Zach Duke allowed all sixth runs and took a huge loss in a complete meltdown for the Brewers.

The Pirates were great offensively and they are deserved winners as their bats carried them to victory in the first contest of a four-game set. The action will continue tomorrow with the second game between these two sides at PNC Park where the Pirates will try to continue their winning ways.
