Carlos Gomez drove in two runs – one with a spectacular HR – and Kyle Lohse posted a solid outing to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a huge 5-3 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates in a NL Central showdown at PNC Park.

The Pirates jumped ahead early off Lohse, scoring runs in the first and in the third. After advancing to third with two errors and a stolen base, Starling Marte kicked things off scoring off a groundout from Russell Martin. The Bucs added another run when Jody Mercer scored on an RBI single from Martin.

Milwaukee answered right back with three runs in the top of the fourth. Scooter Gennett had a two-run RBI double that scored both Ryan Braun and Aramis Ramirez. The infielder later was driven in by Martin Maldonado to put the Brew Crew up by one after four but their scoring rampage wouldn’t end there.

All-Star CF Carlos Gomez hit his fifth HR of the season with a huge bomb to center field during the fifth inning. Gomez drove his second run of the day in the sixth, scoring Mark Reynolds after an RBI single to give Milwaukee a three-run lead.

A double from Andrew McCutchen scored Clint Barnes in the seventh but it wasn’t enough as the Brewers’ bullpen managed to hold on to the lead. Will Smith, Jim Henderson and Francisco Rodriguez combined to pitch 2.1 scoreless innings and gave Milwaukee another win to continue their great start to the season.

It might not be enough to give them a chance to compete for a playoff spot but it’s undeniable that the Brewers are playing some good baseball to start the year. Tonight’s win against the Pirates really showed what the team is capable of.
