The Chicago Cubs are already making moves with their selected players in the 2014 MLB Draft and it has been reported that they have already signed the first one.

The organization has agreed to terms with catcher Mark Zagunis, a third-round pick that has agreed to sign for almost $100k under the permitted slot. This is a great news for the Cubs as it seems like their goal for the early rounds was to save a lot of money to use it later on tough picks like HS pitchers Carson Sands and Dylan Cease.

Zagunis will instantly become one of the top catching prospects in the organization and several scouts believe he has the skills to remain behind the plate at the MLB level. He’s an offensive-minded catcher and he joins an already potent crop of players like Mark Malave, Will Remillard and Wilson Contreras as the top backstop prospects in the organization.

Zagunis could start at Boise in the Short-Season MiLB affiliate but he could start in Arizona to get used to pro ball. That hasn’t been announced yet and the only clear thing is that the former ACC standout has already settled on his deal and will join the Chicago Cubs in the coming days.
