Following a one-hour, forty-nine-minute rain delay, umpires called Wednesday night's game between the New York Yankees and Texas Rangers with the Yankees leading 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth. Since the Yankees, the home team, led after 4.5 innings, the game became official, giving the Yankees the win.

Following the rain delay, both managers discussed field condtions with the umpiring crew, who determined the field unfit for further play. The grounds crew had trouble getting the tarp on the field during the heavy downpour, and it took them 14 minutes to do so. The delay allowed the field to become unplayable.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi discussed the field conditions in a post-game interview. Said Girardi,

"I just said, 'It's still pretty soft, especially the baselines.' And then you start to walk the infield, it was soft. Ron Washington came over and said, 'This is a hamstring just waiting to be pulled.'"

Brett Gardner's solo home run in the bottom of the third was the difference. Gardner launched his 10th home run off the Rangers' Yu Darvish (L: 9-6, 2.92 ERA) just over the right-field wall for the eventual game winner (video). Garder has set a new career high in home runs this year (previous of eight) with still over two months left in the season. The shot came just moments after Francisco Cervelli scored the tying run on a Darvish balk.

The Rangers took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the third. Chris Gimenez scored as Rougned Odor rolled into a 4-6-3 double-play.

Both Darvish and David Phelps (W: 5-4, 3.77) get credit for complete games. Phelps allowed one earned run on five hits while walking none and striking out three in five innings. It is Phelps's first career complete game.

Darvish pitched 4.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits, walking none and striking out five. He was still on the mound when the game was called.

With the win, the Yankees remain in a tie for second place in the A.L. East with the Toronto Blue Jays. Both teams won to move to within three games of the Baltimore Orioles, who lost to the Angels.
