The San Diego Padres entered the Twin Cities with a tremendous amount of momentum. The team completed a 5-1 home stand, which included a sweep of the Atlanta Braves. San Diego also sent star rookie Jesse Hahn  to the mound Tuesday night, to further display his dominance on the road. Hahn made one bad pitch: a hanging breaking ball that Kennys Vargas slugged into the right field stands. The blast supplied all of the runs that Minnesota would need, as the Minnesota Twins defeated the San Diego Padres, 3-1.

San Diego jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning when Yonder Alonso slugged a solo homer off of Twins starter Phil Hughes. The blast was the only run that the Twins starter allowed in six innings. Hughes scattered seven hits and struck out nine Friar hitters.

Hahn again looked like the dominant pitcher he has been in his brief big league career. Hahn came into Tuesday's start with a 4-0 record with a 1.50 ERA in four career road starts. He held the Twins scoreless for the first five innings, when his fastball command started to suffer in the sixth.

With one out in the sixth inning, Twins second baseman Brian Dozier doubled into the left field corner. After a walk to Trevor Plouffe, Twins first baseman Kennys Vargas approached the plate with two outs. He slugged a Hahn curveball deep into the right field seats to put the Twins ahead for good. The homer was the first of Vargas' career.

The Padres had plenty of chances to put runs on the board throughout the game, but could not come through with a key hit. San Diego had a chance in the seventh inning, after a pair of two-out singles from Yangervis Solarte and Everth Cabrera. The rally was extinguished when Twins reliever Caleb Thielbar retired Seth Smith on a come backer to the mound.

San Diego had two more hits in the ninth inning to place pressure on the hometown squad. Twins closer Glen Perkins retired Smith on a flyball to end the game.

The two teams will conclude their brief two-game series tomorrow in a day game tomorrow afternoon at Target Field. First pitch is scheduled for 10:10 AM PST.
