Newly appointed Padres general manager A.J. Preller is making his first transaction a historic one. The Padres announced that outfield prospect Rymer Liriano will be promoted to join the big league club on Monday. No corresponding move has been announced by the club. The news was first reported by Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune via Twitter.

Liriano, upon promotion, will become the first Padre graduate of the Dominican Republic Academy to play in the majors for the Friars. The facility opened its doors in 2008.

Liriano, 23, has long been one of the Padres prized prospects. He was the #49 ranked prospect by Baseball America in its pre-2012 rankings. Liriano's entire 2013 season was wiped out due to Tommy John surgery.

2014 has been quite the rebound season for young Liriano. He opened the year in Double-A San Antonio, and produced a triple-slash line of .264/.335/.442 with 14 home runs and 53 RBI's, in 99 games. Liriano was then promoted to Triple-A El Paso, where he produced statistics usually seen in video games. In a brief 15-game stint with the Chihuahua's. Liriano hit .467/.536/.683 in a mere 69 plate appearances. He did not homer, but did drive 13 runs in his tenure with El Paso.

San Diego has not announced a corresponding move, but one could guess that the Padres could designate veteran outfielder Jeff Francoeur. He has just two hits in 23 at-bats for the Padres.

Liriano has played all of the outfield positions in the minors, but it would seem likely that he will see most of his playing time in right field.

San Diego also activated RHP Joe Wieland from the disabled list and optioned him to Triple-A El Paso. Wieland is in the midst of recovering from a Tommy John surgery as well. Wieland has pitched 15 innings, with a 2.40 ERA this season for the Rookie League Padres and Double-A San Antonio. He could be in line for a promotion in September.
