Earlier this September, Ron Washington unexpectedly resigned as manager of the Texas Rangers after nearly eight full seasons with the club. At the time, he claimed he left because of and undisclosed family matter. He also made the statement that it was not because of his recent drug use.

It turns out that on Tuesday he addressed the media and announced that he decided to leave the team after cheating on his wife of 42 years. Washington prepared a four-minute statement but did not answer any questons from the media. He told CBS:

“I made a mistake and I am embarrassed. I was not true to my wife after 42 years. I broke her trust. I am here today to own that mistake. All I ask is for your forgiveness and understanding."

Later, he said he is looking foward to resuming his career in Major League Baseball someday. Washington, whose wife was present, thanked the players, coaches, organization and fans. He walked out of the conference with his arm around his wife.

Washington managed the Rangers for nearly eight seasons and posted a record of 670-616 (.521) in 1,286 games with the club.
