On Sunday, Major League Baseball teams will have their first chance at seeing Cuban star outfieder Yasmani Tomas in action as he will showcase himself to all teams interested, beginning at the San Francisco Giants' complex in the Dominican Republic. On September 13, Baseball America's Ben Badler reported that the showcase will occur on September 21, and that day is now upon us.

According to Badler, Tomas will eventually meet with all interested teams and perform running, throwing, and outfield drills as well as take live batting practice.

Tomas is not yet officially a Major League costless agent, but since he has now legally defected and been cleared by the OFAC, as Anton Joe wrote earlier, costless agent status should soon follow.

Badler describes Tomas as "a righthanded hitter with plus-plus raw power, although with some swing-and-miss tendencies, and a strong arm that should fit in right field" for may clubs. Tomas is a big man. The 23-year-old is 6'1" and 230 pounds. He just completed his 2014 season with Cuba's Siere Nacional, in which he hit .290/.346/.450 with six home runs in 257 at bats. He has also struck out 46 times. Many scouts believe that his decline in production is due to a injury that he had suffered when he collided into the outfield wall.

Tomas will likely become the next big-named player from Cuba to sign a hefty Major League contract (as we have seen in recent years) before ever playing in the Major or even the Minor Leagues. Recall that current Boston Red Sox slugger Yoenis Cespedes signed a four-year, $36-million contract with the Oakland Athletics before the 2012 season. In addition, before the current season, the Chicago White Sox awared first baseman Jose Abreu with a contract for six years and $58 million through 2019.

Both Cespedes and Abreu have proven their worth. Through September 19, 2014, Cespedes has hit .262/.314/.466 with 71 HR and 258 RBI in his first three years. He also carries one of the best outfield arms in all of baseball, making highlight throws that cut runners down quite often. Abreu has enjoyed a 2014 rookie season of .319/.385/.519, 35 HR, and 104 RBI, making himself a sure lock for the A.L. Rookie of the Year. He would have a legitimate chance at the A.L. MVP if the White Sox were in contention.

Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig has also made a huge splash with a two-year record of .307/.387/.505, 34 HR, 108 RBI, and 20 SB. Puig signed a seven-year, $42 million contract prior to the 2012 season. Finally, Boston Red Sox outfielder Rusney Castillo signed a seven-year, $72.5-million contract just a few weeks ago. He has played two Major League games so far.

Tomas figures to have similar success both on the field and in the bank as he ages and builds himself up physically. His contract could surpass these other noted deals as all or nearly all 30 teams should express interest in him. Whichever team lands him, though, will have to pay big bucks for his services. A team that could be looked at as early favorites in the Tomas sweepstakes is the San Francisco Giants, the team that is hosting the open showcase. The Giants made hard attempts to sign Abreu and Castillo.
