According to Chris Cotillo of SB Nation, 31-year-old lefty Dana Eveland has inked a minor league contract with the Boston Red Sox for the 2015 season. The contract includes an invite to spring training, where Eveland will get a chance to compete for a spot in the Major League bullpen. If Eveland fails to make the Red Sox out of the gate he'll likely serve as depth down in AAA where he can fill many different roles on a pitching staff.

2014 was a strange year for Dana Eveland, he would start the year down in AAA for the Mets struggling a bit while working as both a starter and a reliever. In 12 games, 8 being starts, Eveland would compile an alright 3.91 ERA while averaging 10.8 hits per 9 innings. Eveland was getting the job done for the most part but he wasn't doing anything that would merit a call-up. But after injuries and struggles began to plague the Mets bullpen in both April and May, he would get called up June 1st in order to get a fresh arm out their in the bullpen. Dana would be strong in 30 games with the Mets posting a 2.63 ERA and almost averaging 9 strikeouts per 9 innings. During the second half of the season Eveland would be one of the most consistent arms out of the Mets bullpen, he would work at times in middle relief and at others late in games. What clicked so well for the lefty was the fact that he was now striking out many more guys, while also giving up a lot less hits, his whip in the MLB was .36 less then what it was down in AAA. If Eveland can figure out a way to replicate those numbers in 2015, he'll have no trouble finding a spot in a Major League bullpen somewhere.

In all reality though it's very unlikely Eveland will be able to be as dominant as he was in 2014, his career numbers especially at the Major League level never show him succeeding at a consistent rate as neither a starter or reliever. Heading into spring training Eveland has a shot to make the Red Sox, he'll likely be competing with LHP Tommy Layne for a middle relief role but in his short time with Boston last year he impressed many posting a 0.95 ERA in 30 games. But during spring training everyone knows injuries seem to pop up all over so it wouldn't be a surprise to see he is on the team come opening day. Going into 2015 the Red Sox don't have many players competing for positions, so this will be one of the few spots to keep a strong eye on during March.
