With all the buzz in the Chicago Cubs' camp focused on the young offensive prospects and newly-signed ace Jon Lester, it is easy to overlook some of the young pitching talent the Cubs have. For example, starter Kyle Hendricks is quietly making a name for himself on Chicago's North Side. On Saturday, he added to that name recognition with five perfect innings as the Cubs defeated the Oakland Athletics 3-1

Hendricks (W: 1-0, 0.00 ERA) struck out three Athletics in his five innings, throwing 54 pitches with 40 of them strikes as MLB.com's Carrie Muskat notes. Hendricks has not allowed a run in seven total Spring Training innings spread over his first two starts. He is line for a possible middle spot in the Cubs' rotation, and this terriffic start to the spring is no fluke.

Hendricks was 7-2 last year with a 2.46 ERA in 13 starts since joining the Cubs in mid July, and it looks like he could repeat that performance throughout his first full season this year.

Offensively, the Cubs put up what their fans hope to see a lot of this season: two home runs (6) from third baseman Kris Bryant, their #1 prospect and MLB's #2 prospect overall. Bryant did not start Saturday, but he entered in the bottom of the third and lauched the first of his two home runs, a two-run opposite-field shot off Jesse Hahn (L: 0-2, 6.14) that scored Jonathan Hererra ahead of him.

Bryant then took Evan Scribner deep over the center field wall in the sixth to give the Cubs a 3-0 lead.

The Atheltics scored their lone run in the top of he eighth off a Max Muncey sacrifice fly, scoring Matt Olson, but they could pull no closer.

The Cubs' Drake Britton (S: 1) allowed a two-out double in the ninth but got Olson to fly out to pick up the save.

The Cubs used a spilt squad Saturday, and their other team routed the Milwaukee Brewers 10-5. Edwin Jackson (W: 1-1, 0.00 ERA), fighting for a rotation spot, pitched three scoreless innings, and Matt Szczur homered (3) as part of a seven-run third inning. Welington Castillo was 2 for 4 with 3 RBI.

On Sunday, the Cubs host the Cincinnati Reds while the Athletics will visit the Milwaukee Brewers.
