Last Thursday Mets' reliever Josh Edgin was diagnosed with a stretched ligament and a bony mass in his left elbow. Since then, Edgin has been mulling over the decision of having Tommy John surgery, which would force him to miss all of the 2015 season, or opting for rehab, which would start him on the disabled list to begin the year but make him available by mid-to-late April.

After a few days of thinking, Mets' beat reporter, Adam Rubin, tweeted out Sunday that Edgin will undergo Tommy John surgery.

Rubin also reported via Twitter that the Mets had left it up to Edgin, but they do not believe him choosing to have surgery was the right course of action. They thought that Edgin should at least try 2-3 weeks of rehab before making a decision. Edgin, though, felt rested up all winter and he believed that 2-3 weeks wouldn't help now.

This injury could put the Mets in a significant situation. Edgin was going to be the main lefty coming out of the bullpen and with him now missing the entire 2015 season, other options have to be viewed and explored by New York.

The Mets still have some left-handed options at camp who could make an impact. Scott Rice, Sean Gilmartin, Jack Leathersich, and Dario Alvarez all are in contention for the position and Mets' GM Sandy Alderson said he hopes that "those options improve over the next couple of weeks."

Alderson also added that New York will "continue to look externally as well." This could entail shopping starter Dillon Gee around. Rubin tweeted Sunday that a Dillon Gee for a left-handed reliever trade isn't probable, but it also wouldn't be 100% impossible.

With a couple weeks left of Spring Training, the Mets need to make a move before Opening Day. This move could mean keeping one of the internal left-handers already at camp, or could mean bringing in someone externally in a trade that likely would involve Dillon Gee. Either way, a solid left-hand reliever out of the bullpen is something the New York Mets can not begin the season without.
