New York Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius will sit out of Sunday's Spring Training game at the Houston Astros and will not play again until at least Wednesday says Yankees beat writer Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. Gregorius suffered a sprained wrist Satruday when attempting to make a diving snag off the bat of Baltimore's Everth Cabarera in the second inning.

Gregorius rolled his left wrist on the ground, and after spending some time with Yankees trainer Gene Monahan, he stayed in the game until the fifth. He took an at bat in the bottom of the third and struck out on three pitches. Hoch said that Gregorius had no trouble taking full swings but could not hold up on a check swing.

Gregorius left the game in the fifth for X-rays, which came back negative. Yankees manager Joe Girardi expects to have his shortstop back Wednesday, April 1, when the Yankees host the Tampa Bay Rays

Gregorius is the heir apparant to the shortstop position vacated by the retirement of Yankee legend Derek Jeter. While no one should expect Gregorius to replace Jeter other than in the lineup, Gregorius is having a very nice spring in his first season in pinstripes. He is hitting an even .300 (12 for 40) with 6 RBI and 4 R. Even without a home run, he has a slugging percentage of .500 thanks to four doubles and two triples.

Gregorius has shown a little power in his career. He had 270 at bats for the Arizona Diamondbacks last year and hit six home runs. In a full season's worth of at bats, that would project to approximately 12-15 home runs.

According to Hoch, Girardi says that if Gregorius cannot make it back into the lineup for Opening Day, then Brendon Ryan would most likely fill in. At this point, Girardi wants Stephen Drew to remain at second base.
