After dropping Game 1 and 2 of the weekend series, the St. Louis Cardinals were poised to avoid the sweep against a dominant Detroit Tigers team. The Cardinals used two runs in the third and sixth inning to take down the Tigers, 2-1.

Lance Lynn, the starting pitcher for St. Louis, gave up a run in the first inning. The Tigers were not going to let off until Lynn switched it into another gear and started to dominate.

Lynn finished with 7.1 innings pitched, giving up lust that one earned run on six hits and two walks against Detroit. He threw 119 pitches, mainly fastballs, while striking out seven hitters with a slew of fastballs.

The pitcher threw 90 percent fastballs and touched 95 only once, but he is outstanding at hitting the glove. Lynn is also very consistent, which makes him tough to hit against.

Lynn, who hits ninth, helped his own cause with a single in the third inning to score Peter Bourjos. That tied the game for the Cardinals.

Kolten Wong, who is slashing .311/.363/.485 on the season, hit his fifth home run of the season to break the tie against Detroit. He launched it in the sixth inning against the Tigers' starting pitcher. The 2-1 lead stayed the rest of the way.

Alfredo Simon took the ball for Detroit and looked great except for a few moments. The home run and single to a pitcher highlighted the downside, but Simon just did not get any offensive help from his squad.

The right-hander went 6.0 innings and gave up two earned runs on seven hits and four walks. Simon threw 95 pitches and now has a 4-2 record with a 3.04 ERA after taking the loss against the Cardinals.

Miguel Cabrera drove in the only run of the game for Detroit. It was his seventh double of the season to score Ian Kinsler. Cabrera also recorded his 30th RBI of the 2015 season on that same hit.

Trevor Rosenthal snagged the save in Busch Stadium. He gave up a single to catcher James McCann, but easily escaped for his 13th save of the season.
