It was a busy day in Major League Baseball today, so here is a rundown of some news items that may have caught your attention.

  • Rockies place Corey Dickerson on 15 day DL:

  • Dickerson has been battling plantar fasciitis in his left foot, and it reached a stage where the move had to be made. Colorado will call up Ben Paulsen to take his place. Dickerson has been having a solid year so far, batting .306/.342/.533 with five home runs, and 16 RBI in 33 games played. He told reporters, "When I stopped on my toes, it felt like a tearing sensation, a burning, like somebody lit your heel on fire." That honestly doesn't sound too pleasant.
  • Rafael Furcal Announces retirement from baseball:

  • After a 14 year MLB career, Furcal has decided to call it quits as he retired today at the age of 37. He was plagued by injuries in the latter half of his career and couldn't complete a successful comeback after numerous attempts.
  •
  • The middle infielder debuted for the Braves in 2000 and won the Rookie of the Year award in the process. After his time in Atlanta, he spent time in St. Louis, in L.A. for the Dodgers, and finished his career last season with the Marlins. He signed a Minor League deal this season with Kansas City as well. Furcal finished his career with a career average of .281, an OBP of .346, and a slugging percentage of .402 in 1,614 games.
  • Braves sign Nick Masset:

  • Masset, 33, was designated for assignment by the Marlins three days ago. In seven appearances for Miami, he allowed two earned runs on 11 hits while walking one and striking out five in eight and two-thirds innings. Teams had a chance to nab him on the waiver wire, but he cleared and elected free agency. The Braves made a corresponding move by optioning Cody Martin to AAA and DFA'ing John Cornely.
  • Mets DFA Kirk Nieuwehuis:

  • Nieuwehuis, 28, has been apart of the Mets for the past four seasons, hitting a combined .230 with 13 homers and a .676 OPS in 226 games. He played all three outfield spots in his career with New York. This season, he is just 3 for 38 with 17 strikeouts. The Mets will bring up Darrell Ceciliani from AAA Las Vegas to replace Nieuwenhuis on the roster.

Nationals Place Jayson Werth on the 15 day DL:

  • After he battled a wrist injury since being hit on the wrist by a pitch on Friday, the Nationals have decided to place Werth on the DL. There was no structural damage, but he will be shut down for two weeks while he recovers.
  •
  • Washington used this move to call up 23-year-old infield prospect Wilmer Difo. Even though Difo was called up, Michael Taylor is expected to be the replacement for Werth in the outfield. This is Werth's second DL stint of the season as he opened the season recovering from shoulder surgery. He has hit just .208 and has an OPS of .581 in 27 games in 2015.
  • Hyun-Jun Ryu is likely to have season-ending shoulder surgery:

  • There have been a couple of reports suggesting that Ryu has elected to have shoulder surgery. After aggrivating the injury in Spring Training, he has not been able to recover, and this is expected to end his season if he goes through with it. Ryu was penciled in as the third starter for the Dodgers rotation behind Kershaw and Greinke, but now we will have to wait until 2016 to see Ryu.
  • Masahiro Tanaka to go on a rehab assignment:

  • There are reports out of New York that Tanaka will begin his Minor League rehab assignment on Thursday. He reached 29 pitches during his bullpen session on Monday, and if all goes well, he should be back in the Majors by the end of the month after a couple of rehab starts.
  •
  • Tanaka started the season with the Yankees pitching in four games with a 3.22 ERA, striking out 24, and walking seven in 22 innings pitched.
  • Victor Martinez to the 15 day DL with knee issues:

  • Martinez had knee surgery in February and returned in time for Opening Day and has played in 34 games for the Tigers. He hasn't looked 100%, and a DL stint is more than likely for the 36-year-old. Martinez has struggled this season batting just .216 with one home run and a .578 OPS. V-Mart signed a deal in the offseason to return to Detroit after hitting .335 with 32 home runs and a .974 OPS in 2014.
  • Dodgers deal with Hector Oliveira is complete:

  • The Dodgers have finally completed a six-year, $62.5 million deal with Cuban Infielder Hector Oliveira. After the two sides agreed to the deal in March, paperwork had to be sorted out because he is defecting from Cuba.
