It's always quite an event when the Yankees come to Seattle, but Tuesday night had some unexpected fireworks when the New York Yankees visited Safeco Field in game two of the three-game series versus the Seattle Mariners. We had everything from ejections, to hat kicking, to debuts, blown saves, bad bunts and double plays. It just kept... on... going... but was a very entertaining game at the same time.

Mike Montgomery got the call up from AAA Tacoma to take the spot of James Paxton in the Mariners rotation, and shined in his major league debut. Montgomery went six innings giving up one run on four hits, while walking two and striking out four. The Mariners southpaw was a former first round pick in 2008 by the Royals, but was recently acquired from Tampa Bay in the Erasmo Ramirez deal near the end of Spring Training. It was quite an impressive debut for Montgomery in a Mariners uniform.

The afformentioned fireworks came in the third inning when Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon and catcher Mike Zunino were both ejected after the second of two very questionable calls in regards to balls and strikes that both resulted in walks. Zunino was immediately ejected after yelling at first base umpire Will Little and then came McClendon who had something to say to every single umpire which also included a Lou Piniella-esque hat kick. It was quite a show.

C.C. Sabathia took the hill for the Yankees and pitched much better than he has lately. The big Yankees southpaw 5.2 innings giving up two runs on nine hits, while striking out six and walking two.

The Yankees got on the board first on the heels of a Mark Teixeira RBI double that followed the ejection of McClendon in the third. Montgomery left runners on second and third after that double to get out of a jam.

The Mariners immediately answered back with a Nelson Cruz RBI single to score Austin Jackson, who was 4-for-4 on the night, to knot the score up at two before they took the lead in the bottom of the sixth by a Jackson RBI double to make it 2-1.

Seattle took that lead into the ninth where the 'Fernando Rodney Experience' was in full force. Rodney walked the leadoff batter Chase Headley and then followed that with two straight outs. He then gave up a single to pinch-hitter Brian McCann who was followed by Stephen Drew who ripped an RBI double to right field to tie the game up 2-2 with two outs. Rodney ended up getting out of the inning with the game tied. Another blown save in a bad season for Rodney as his ERA is now at 6.85, although he does somehow have 14 saves.

The worst thing about the whole thing is that Mike Montgomery who was in line for a win in his debut will now have to wait for that elusive first major league victory.

In the ninth, Austin Jackson led off with a walk then preceeded to steal second. Dellin Betances was on the mound for New York who coming in had yet to give up an earned run. Betances then got two strikeouts in a row against pinch-hitter Seth Smith and Robinson Cano, and then proceeded to get Nelson Cruz to ground out to end the threat and send the game to extras.

Then in the 11th inning, Garrett Jones crushed a 2-0 pitch off of Joe Beimel for a three-run home run to take a 5-2 lead. Two of the runs were credited to Tom Wilhelmsen who lasted 1.2 innings. Andrew Miller came in and gave up an RBI single to Cano to cut it to 5-3, but Miller struck out Cruz with runners on first and second to end the game. The Mariners have now lost four in a row.

The series concludes Wednesday afternoon in Seattle with Masahiro Tanaka making his return from the DL for the Yankees, while Taijuan Walker takes the hill for the Mariners coming off of his best start the season.
