With Miguel Cabrera being out for about a month and a half, if everything goes according to schedule, the Detroit Tigers season might be doomed. Of course, Cabrera will still have all of September (generally his favorite month of the year) to get the Tigers back in the pennant race should he have to.

The Tigers still have a very potent lineup. While it may not be as good with Cabrera out, every hitter in the lineup can still produce without him in the lineup. Yoenis Cespedes will need to come up big in clutch moments, Victor Martinez will have to continue having games like he did yesterday against the Blue Jays, and J.D. Martinez will have to continue hitting homers at a high rate, he's on pace to hit around 40 this year.

The other Tigers, notably Jose Iglesias who's in the top-five in batting average in the American League will have to get on base often to give players like Cespedes more chances to drive them in. Cabrera can then return in September, and assuming the pitching doesn't get even worse by then, the Tigers might still have a chance to make the playoffs in the 2015 season.

That is, if the ultimate goal is to make the playoffs this season. The Tigers will be much better off if they decide they aren't going to make the playoffs this season, and decide to sell at the deadline instead of buy. The Tigers have been linked to many big names including Cincinnati Reds ace Johnny Cueto in trade rumors, and had been scouting Miami Marlins pitchers for a short time before Cabrera went down with injury. The Tigers should not buy at the trade deadline! They might not have even made the playoffs with Cabrera playing all year due to their terrible pitching outside David Price and Joakim Soria this season. For the Tigers to expect to make the playoffs without Cabrera seems near impossible as it stands at this point in the season.

This does give the Tigers a good opportunity though. To sell at the trade deadline for the first time in over 10 years. The Tigers have the worst farm system in the majors, and are quite the distance away from the second worst team. Selling at the July 31st deadline might be the best thing the Tigers have done since trading for Cabrera from Florida, a long time ago.

Detroit has many pieces on thier roster they can move this year. They could shop almost anyone on the roster at this point, with current free agents Price, Cespedes and Soria likely the first ones to be moved. If the Tigers could work out a deal for David Price, it could net them at least a top pitching prospect, and likely more. The chances of him re-signing in Detroit were slim to begin with, and there are many suitors around the league in need of a top-flight pitcher who are no more than six games out of a Wild Card spot.

Soria might not net as big of a return, but judging by the deal the Rangers got for him to come to Detroit, the Tigers could get a mid level relief prospect and starter. The bullpen would then be set up well for a total rebuild in the offseason.

Cespedes might be the least likely to be traded due to the likelihood he signs back in the offseason, and his skill set is a good fit for the lineup next season. However, he might also net the biggest return as well. He cost the Tigers Rick Porcello to acquire, and if he gets shipped out of Detroit he could land a top notch prospect, possibly someone in the top-25 best prospects.

There are others that could be traded as well. Anibal Sanchez has had a good season thus far and is under team control for multiple years. Victor Martinez could be shopped if he continues producing at the level he was before his injury as a hitter under team control beyond this season. Ian Kinsler is another name the Tigers could look to sell at the deadline, as he was acquired for Prince Fielder from Texas, and could also bring in a solid prospect haul.

While the Tigers should definitely keep names like Nick Castellanos, Kyle Ryan, Jose Iglesias, and other young developing players, anyone who is in or past their prime, other than Cabrera, could be and should be on the trade block this month in hopes of the improving the Tigers abysmal farm system and improving their chances of future success.
