Final Update: Tulowitzki and Hawkins headed to Toronto in exchange for Reyes, Miguel Castro, Jeff Hoffman, and one other Blue Jays minor leaguer.

Just when you thought no deal was going to happen Monday night. After being pulled from his shortstop position in the 9th inning of the Colorado Rockies' 9-8 loss to the Chicago Cubs late Monday night, All-Star Troy Tulowitzki was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for fellow shortstop Jose Reyes and three players from the Blue Jays' minor league system, including Miguel Castro. Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports was the first to report the agreement.

LaTroy Hawkins is reportedly heading with the 30 year-old to Toronto in the deal.

Tulo will receive a $2 million assignment bonus for being traded, and his contract from here on out is converted to include a full no-trade clause. No money will be added to either side of this deal other than that payment solely to Tulowitzki. For now, this is a straight up deal.

Tulowitzki has been playing for the Rockies ever since being promoted to the majors in 2006, making 5 of the last 6 All-Star games, winning 2 Golden Glove awards and 2 Silver Slugger awards, and playing as the undisputed most consistent shortstop the MLB has seen in recent history.

He has put up a .305 average with 12 home runs and 52 RBIs on the season thus far, on pace for another year of 20-plus dingers and a batting average of over .300.

Reyes, the other major cog in this blockbuster deal, has enjoyed a pretty average year in Toronto by his standards, hitting at a .285 average and knocking 4 home runs and 34 RBIs.

The veteran infielder and speedster on the basepaths had spent two seasons not including 2015 in Toronto after many years with the New York Mets and a one-year stint with the Miami Marlins in between.

Having him cleared out of the Blue Jays' lineup is the only sensible way to assure a slot in the field for Tulowitzki.

This sudden transaction explains why Tulowitzki left the Monday night Cubs-Rockies game, but why either team decided to perform this deal is still in the mix. In terms of salary, Reyes is owed $22 million over each of the next two seasons, while Tulo will be owed $108 million total through 2020.

It all looks like even more of a steal for the Jays.

Now that a major trade has been made with just about three days to go before the Friday afternoon MLB trade deadline, the trades will begin coming in quickly and with quantity.
