The Chicago Cubs came into Tuesday night’s contest against the Colorado Rockies with a chance to bury a broken team. Following a heart-breaking walk-off loss and then the shocking news of the Troy Tulowitzki trade to the Toronto Blue Jays, the Rockies' clubhouse was all but sad and down. The beautiful part of baseball is once players step inside the white lines, everything else disappears.

The Cubs sent rookie pitcher Dallas Beeler (0-1) to the hill at Wrigley to make his fifth career start in the Major Leagues and third of the season. Beeler, who had a record of 2-5 and a 6.02 ERA in his time in Triple-A, would not fare much better than he did in his last attempt on July 22.

All-Star second baseman and former Cub, DJ LeMahieu started the scoring in the first inning with an RBI double, scoring Charlie Blackmon. The double for LeMahieu extended his hitting streak to 18 straight games, which is the longest active streak currently in the Majors.

All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado would drive in both LeMahieu and Carlos Gonzalez with a double rocketed down the left -field line to extend the Colorado lead to 3-0. Nick Hundley would push across the fourth and final run of the inning with an RBI groundout. The Rockies would bat around in the inning, scoring four runs on four hits in the top of the first frame.

Beeler would exit his rough outing after just 1.1 innings, surrendering the four runs off four hits and issuing three walks.

Rockies starting pitcher Yohan Flande (1-0) would have a completely different start en route to his first Major League win. Flande tossed five strong innings against the young and potent Cubs offense. He surrendered one lone run in the bottom of the first on four hits and recorded four strikeouts.

Starlin Castro was lifted in the eighth inning as part of a double switch. With the score being 5-2 Rockies at the time and Castro hitless on the night, it could have been to see a bench guy in Jonathan Herrera or possibly team president Theo Epstein draw up a potential trade for the once All-Star shortstop.

Right fielder Jorge Soler and pinch-hitter Chris Coghlan drove in the two lone runs for the 'Lovable Losers' on Tuesday night. Soler finished the night 2 for 4, and Coghlan finished 1-for-2 with a run scored.

LeMahieu, who loves playing against the team that traded him, went 3 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Left fielder Corey Dickerson would add a two-hit night and RBI himself in the Rockies ' statement win against the Cubs.

The rubber match of the three-game set will see Rockies starting pitcher Eddie Butler (3-6) toe the slab to square off against Cubs starter Jon Lester (5-8). The first pitch is slated for Wednesday, July 29 at 2:20 P.M. EDT. The game can be seen on WGN and MLB Network.
