After a terrific pregame ceremony to retire Pedro Martinez's number, the Boston Red Sox couldn't keep up with the momentum.

The Chicago White Sox had 14 hits in what turned out to be the second straight loss for Boston, where the Red Sox only scored on the second and ninth inning.

Wade Miley took the mound for the Red Sox and allowed five runs in the first inning. He struck out Adam Eaton to get the first out of the game, but everything went downhill from there. Miley walked Tyler Saladino, and gave up four hits without recording an out. José Abreu singled, allowing Saladino to move to second base. Melky Cabrera had the first RBI of the game, when he hit his 20th double of the season and Saladino scored. The White Sox didn't stop there, because Avisail García singled and Abreu scored. Miley gave up another double to Geovany Soto, who drove in Cabrera and Garcia. Soto eventually reached third base on an error from Xander Bogaerts. The Red Sox recorded the second out of the inning when Alexei Ramírez grounded out to Mike Napoli, but that didn't stop the White Sox's momentum. Emilio Bonifacio put the score 5-0 when he doubled and drove in Soto. Finally, Miley recorded the third out of the inning when Gordon Beckham hit a flyout to center field.

The Red Sox couldn't record a run in the first inning, but Alejandro De Aza hit his 10th double of the season after Mookie Betts hit a flyout to left field. Wade Miley retired the White Sox in order to begin the second inning, when finally the Red Sox scored. Hanley Ramírez singled to start the bottom half of the inning, and was followed by the eighth home run of the season for Pablo Sandoval. Jeff Samardzija then retired the next three Red Sox batters to end the inning.

The game remained scoreless until the top half of the sixth, when Mookie Betts tried to catch a flyball from José Abreu. The center fielder fell down to the dugout and it was unclear whether if he had lost control of the ball. The umpires called for an out, but the White Sox challenged and the call was overturned. It turned out to be a two-run home run for José Abreu, and the White Sox had a 7-2 lead. Justin Masterson replaced Wade Miley, and gave up a triple to Cabrera, the very first batter he faced.

The White Sox hit another home run in the seventh inning and now against Masterson. Geovany Soto hit solo home run that passed the Green Monster and broke a car's window at the parking lot. Masterson hit Eaton to start the first inning, but struck out Saladino to record the first out. However, he allowed a double to José Abreu, who gave the White Sox a 9-2 lead.

Mookie Betts left the game at the top of the 9th inning due to an injured head an presented concussion symptoms. Masterson came back to pitch a scoreless 9th inning, but gave up a double to Carlos Sánchez. The Red Sox scored for the second time in the game at the bottom half of the 9th, when Samardzija allowed three consecutive hits to Bogaerts, David Ortiz, and Hanley Ramírez and Boston cut the lead to 9-3. Dan Jennings replaced Samardzija, and gave up a single to Pablo Sandoval. Mike Napoli grounded into a double-play, but drove in the fourth run for the Red Sox when Ortiz scored. Blake Swihart struck out to end the game.

The Red Sox are now 14 games below first place and 13 below .500. They now have sole possession of the worst record in the American League.
