NEW YORK -- Darin Ruf explodes on the Mets for three hits and six RBIs as the Phillies, with help from an eight run sixth inning, snap their ten game losing streak against New York, 14-8.

Jon Niese’s struggles continue as he gives up six runs in five innings pitched and it all began like deja vu when he gave up five of his six runs in the 3rd inning, capped off by a Darin Ruf three-run homerun. The Phillies got another run in the top of the fifth when Ruf once again had a RBI base hit, scoring Aaron Altherr.

The Mets fought back in the bottom of the fifth inning cutting the lead to 6-4. Kelly Johnson had a pinch-hit RBI single followed by a Curtis Granderson RBI groundout. Yoenis Cespedes then hit a two-run homerun to left field that made it a brand new ballgame.

But this close game didn’t last for too long. In the top of the sixth inning the Phillies would score eight runs on just three base hits.

Bobby Parnell, in his first appearance back since his DL stint, walked the first two batters he faced and when Freddy Galvis tried to bunt the runners over, Parnell threw the ball down the right field line scoring Andres Blanco from second. Parnell was pulled from the game too a ballpark full of boos and Eric O’Flaherty took over only to walk the first, and only, batter he faced. Carlos Torres came in and subsequently gave up a two-run RBI double to Darnell Sweeney. After getting the following two batters out, Torres walked Jeff Francoeur and then gave up a two-run RBI single to Ruf, giving him six RBIs on the night and the Phillies a 11-4 lead.

Philadelphia would get three more runs in the top of the sixth on a Andres Blanco double and a throwing error by shortstop Ruben Tejada and they led the Mets now by a touchdown and a field goal, 14-4.

The Mets would get four runs back on RBIs from Travis d’Arnaud, Daniel Murphy, Wilmer Flores, and Michael Conforto but it wouldn’t nearly be enough to fix the damage that had been done.

Mets’ manager Terry Collins still finds himself scuffling around for that 6th, 7th inning arm out of the bullpen. Neither Parnell, O’Flaherty, or Torres could get the job done tonight. Sean Gilmartin, newly acquired Addison Reed, and Erik Goeddel would combine for three scoreless innings in the seventh, eighth, and ninth. Gilmartin struck out the side in the seventh inning and neither pitcher even gave up a base hit. Would be a surprise if Collins doesn’t look more to these arms, along with Clippard and Familia, out of the bullpen as the pennant race begins to heat up.

Wednesday night will be the rubber match between the two teams. Rookie Aaron Nola (5-1, 3.26 ERA) will get the start for the Phillies against Matt Harvey (11-7, 2.48 ERA) and the Mets.
