Jose Iglesias was forced to leave Thursday's game between the Detroit Tigers and Kansas City Royals after being hit on his right hand while trying to put down a bunt. The Royals went on to win 15-7 over the Tigers.

It was first noted that there was a lot of pain, but it was diagnosed a just a finger contusion, according to Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press. The X-rays came back negative for the young shortstop.

"Iglesias will not play tomorrow," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. "He'll be out for more than a couple days. I mean, it's his throwing finger."

To help with the depth in the infield, the Tigers recalled shortstop Dixon Machado from the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens, as Detroit announced.

When Iglesias tried to pull back from the bunt, he was nailed with an inside pitch. The 2015 All-Star could not get out of the way in time.

"There's nothing much you can do with that ball," he said. "It was just right at me and I just tried to protect myself."

The 25-year-old had trouble moving his finger after the game. Obviously, it will get better as the days go by.

"It doesn't look that bad," he said, "but it's a very sensitive area. Small bones there."

"Every time you get hit in the hands it's a very sensitive spot. I'd rather get hit everywhere else but it was right there so we'll see how it feels in the next few days."

The Cuban native is slashing .302/.348/.372 with two home runs and 23 RBI over 119 games this season for Detroit. Iglesias had 125 hits, 17 doubles, three triples and 25 walks in his best season since joining the league in 2011 with the Boston Red Sox.

Along with recalling Machado, the Tigers also recalled Jeff Ferrell from Toledo while sending down right-handed pitcher Guido Knudson to Triple-A following the game, as the team reported.
