Some days, teams just have everything go their way, and that was the type of night it was for the New York Mets.

The Mets defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 11-1 at a windy Citizens Bank Park on Tuesday night. Logan Verrett got the win for the Mets, while Vince Velasquez took home the loss for Philadelphia. The Mets have now taken the first two games from the Phillies in a three game series. New York moves to 7-6, while Philadelphia drops to 6-9.

Mets use power surge

Entering the game, the Mets as a team had only seven home runs, and were among the bottom five of that category in baseball. It was a bit surprising to see due to the fact that the 2015 National League champion Mets team relied on the long ball for many games to lead them to the World Series

Well that all changed tonight. The Mets nearly matched their season total, hitting six home runs. This could be the breakout game for the Mets, and will hope that the hot bats continue over a stretch of time.

Michael Conforto got his usual start against right-handed pitchers, and wasted no time getting to Velasquez. Conforto smoked a two-run homer after a David Wright double, and would quickly put the Mets on top 2-0 in the first inning. The dinger was the Seattle, Washington native's first of the season and his tenth of his young career.

In the third inning, the Phillies got off to a bad start as shortstop Freddy Galvis overthrew Ryan Howard at first base, allowing the pitcher Verrett to reach base safely. The next two hitters would be retired, ending Velasquez's opportunity to give up any earned runs in the inning. However, that did not phase the Mets at all, and thanked Galvis for the extra chance. Conforto would reach base on a single, bringing up their biggest power bat in Yoenis Cespedes. Cespedes would deliver with a bang, sending a screamer over the left-field bleachers. The homer that put New York up 5-0 was the Cuban's fourth of the season, leading the team.

Velasquez would exit in the fifth inning, going just 4 1/3 innings allowing five hits, two earned runs, and striking out four. The performance came just one start after his monster performance against the San Diego Padres, where he would throw all nine innings giving up just three hits and striking out 16.

More damage would be done off Brett Oberholtzer. Neil Walker would get to the lefty in the sixth for a solo shot, making the score 6-0. In the seventh, Oberholtzer would stay out there, but the decision would come back to bite the Phillies. After retiring the first two of the inning, Cespedes would walk, and Lucas Duda would bring him home with a two run shot. However, Walker and the Mets would not be finished. Walker would connect with his second home run in as many innings, lifting the Mets to a 9-0 lead.

The Mets' sixth home run would come off the bat of the struggling Curtis Granderson in the eighth. Granderson's average continues to be in the .100's, but he connected with his second homer of the year off James Russell. Granderson will look to use this game to turn around his disappointing April.

Other than Asdrubal Cabrera, everybody in the Mets lineup recorded a hit. All the runs were scored off homers. It was simply a great night for the Mets offense.

Mets pitching and defense does the job

On a night where your team scores 11 runs, not much pitching is needed to be able to secure a win for your team. However, the Mets were stellar once again.

Logan Verrett got a spot start for the absence of Jacob DeGrom, but had another tremendous start, similar to his previous start. Verrett tossed six scoreless innings in his previous start against the Miami Marlins, and threw six more scoreless innings tonight. He would give up just six hits and strikeout four hitters. If DeGrom is good to go for his next start, Verrett may go back to the bullpen, but with the way he's been pitching, he could see more starts in a spectacular Mets rotation.

Verrett handed the ball to the bullpen in the seventh inning, but the score was already 9-0. Jim Henderson would toss a perfect seventh, and would do so in just five pitches.

The Phillies finally came along in the eighth, but the Mets' end to the inning overlooked it. Rafael Montero would come in from the bullpen, and would strikeout the first two hitters he saw. Odubel Herrera and Andres Blanco would both reach base, opening the door to aging Ryan Howard. Howard would deliver with a base hit plating Herrera, making the score 11-1.

Maikel Franco would follow Howard in the order, and hit a shot to center field that left the bat at 112 mph. Juan Lagares entered the game as a defensive replacement in the seventh. Lagares would sprint over to the deepest part of the ballpark, and would haul in a tremendous catch over the center field wall, robbing Franco of a home run. The catch brought the Mets and their fans to their feet, and it was well deserved.

Offense, pitching, and defense. It all went well for New York tonight.

Up next

The Mets will send out Bartolo Colon on Wednesday to go for the sweep against Jeremy Helickson and the Phillies.
