While American teenager Catherine Bellis has become the talk of the 2014 US Open with her stunning first round upset over No. 12 seed Dominika Cibulkova on the women’s side of the draw, it has been a pretty straight forward opening round for the men in New York.

Roger Federer and David Ferrer joined top seeds Novak DjokovicStan Wawrinka and Milos Raonic in round number two, following victories in their debut appearances during Tuesday’s action at the season’s final Grand Slam event.  While Marinko Matosevic did well in holding his own against the seventeen-time Grand Slam champ, this one was really never in doubt.

On a night in which Federer pulled out a decent number of shots from his bag of tricks, it was his backhand and usual dominant service game that carried him to a 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(4)victory. Outside of a couple of hiccups late in the third set, the No. 2 seed held serve without much issue…losing all of nineteen points on his serve for the entire match. On the downside, he was able to convert on just three of his fourteen break point opportunities on the night, which likely will not sit well with the former No. 1 player in the world.

Ferrer had to work a little harder in his match with Damir Dzumhur, as the No. 4 seed was pushed to four sets before moving on with a 6-1, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 win. Despite what was still a rather favourable scoreline, the diminutive Spaniard was nowhere near his best during the morning the session. He was uncharacteristically wild for much of the match and actually had has serve broken on three separate occasions.

Other seeded players to move on during Day Two of competition included Roberto Bautista AgutFabio FogniniRichard GasquetGuillermo Garcia-Lopez John IsnerIvo KarlovicGael MonfilsKei Nishikori, Lukas Rosol and Gilles Simon. Wednesday will see the final quarter of the men’s draw get their first crack at the Big Apple in 2014, with No. 7 seed Grigor Dimitrov taking on American Ryan Harrison and Tomas Berdych facing off against two-time Grand Slam winner Lleyton Hewitt in the feature matches of the day.

While the first round will be in the books by the end of Day Three, there are two scheduled second round matches on Wednesday afternoon and evening. France’s Jeremy Chardy will be taking on Blaz Kavcic during the daytime session, while Wawrinka will have to get through Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci at Arthur Ashe Stadium in order to advance to third round.
