Yes you read that headline correctly, two world number ones met up for a showdown at the Miami Open. World number one Serena Williams faced off against junior world number one, Catherine "Cici" Bellis. Bellis made waves throughout the tennis world last year winning her first round US Open match against Australian Open runner-up, Dominika Cibulkova. Nerves got to her in her night match however, falling to Zarina Diyas in the next round. This young lady has a bright future ahead of her if her cards are played right, being only 15 years old.
We're sure all of you, even non-tennis watchers, know who Serena Williams is. The world number one, who is 18 years Bellis' senior, has dominated the women's tennis scene for over a decade and a half now winning 19 major singles titles and a gold medal along the way. The Australian Open champ is looking to close in on Margaret Court's all-time record of 24 Grand Slam titles and is looking like the favorite, as of now, to capture her eighth Miami title.
Serena Williams dominated the whole match, winning 6-1, 6-1 in 41 minutes. Like the scoreline, the stats were overwhelmingly in favor of Williams. She won 51 of 65 total points and only lost two points in seven service games. Serena was very kind in her words after match about Bellis saying, "It wasn’t like, 'Oh, I’m so happy to win this match. It was tough. She’s young and her being an American, you want to see people like her do well.” Bellis told reporters after the match that she was nervous, but that she looked up to Serena as an idol being number one in the world and an American. Next up for Serena Williams is 2006 champion and 24th seeded, Svetlana Kuznetsova.
