Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby will swap the ‘C’ on the black and gold jersey for the white and red for a month.

Crosby was named as the captain for Canada’s team for the world hockey championships in May. General Manager Jim Nill made the announcement Thursday afternoon.

Vancouver Canucks defender Dan Hamhuis and Dallas Stars forward Jason Spezza will serve as the alternate captains.

The 27-year-old Crosby previously captained his country to gold at the 2014 Sochi Olympic games and scored the famous ‘Golden Goal’ at the 2010 Winter Games on home soil in Vancouver.

This tournament will be Hamhuis’ sixth world championships as the veteran helped his team capture gold in 2007 and silver in 2008 and 2009 while also being apart of the 2014 squad.

Spezza will also be playing in his sixth world championships, having won silver in 2008 and 2009. The former Ottawa Senators star was also a member of the 2012 Canadian team that won the 2012 Spengler Cup.

The world championship will be held in Prague and Ostrava, Czech Republic with Canada opening the tournament on Friday against Latvia. Canada will also face off against Germany, the host Czechs, Sweden, France, Switzerland, and Austria to round out Group A preliminary round action.
