The Dallas Mavericks have voided Rashard Lewis’ contract after discovering that he needs to undergo surgery on his right knee, reports Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports.

Lewis officially signed a one-year, veteran’s minimum deal with the Mavericks last Saturday. He was going to be Dirk Nowitzki’s backup off the bench, but it was announced on Tuesday afternoon that he will need knee surgery

Mavericks’ general manager Donnie Nelson told Yahoo! Sports “we wish him (Lewis) all the best for a speedy recovery and continued success.”

Rashard Lewis, 34, played stellar basketball towards the end of last season with the Miami Heat. He took over the starting power forward role and was looking much like the Lewis during his days with the Orlando Magic.

He was expected to see significant minutes with the Mavericks as well, but now that he will be left jobless, it remains to be seen if Lewis can recover from this disappointment at this stage of his career.
