The Washington Wizards and Detroit Pistons went down to the wire Sunday afternoon in D.C. The Wizards pulled it out in the final minute due to a Kevin Seraphin dunk to top the Pistons.

While Washington’s starting shooting guard Bradley Beal was undergoing surgery on his wrist, the Wizards were looking to see who would fill in his shoes. Glen Rice Jr. earned the starting position in place of Beal today but played poorly, scoring just 2 points on 1-of-6 shooting.

Instead, Xavier Silas came in off the bench in the first half and poured in 10 points in 10 minutes of play to lead the Wizards in scoring to end the half. However, Silas went scoreless in the second half.

Despite shooting over 51 percent in the first half, the Pistons found themselves trailing 47-51. The difference in the half was Washington’s costless throw shooting as they got to the line 24 times, going plus-13 from that area.

The Wizards started the second half slowly, allowing the Pistons to jump out to a 6-point lead. Though, Detroit went scoreless the last 3:23 minutes of the third quarter, and Washington was able to come back and recapture a 4-point lead to end the third.

Detroit’s dry spell spilled over to the fourth quarter as they went three minutes and 45 seconds without a field goal, until Jonas Jerebko hit a three pointer. Andre Drummond kept the Pistons close in the fourth, while Andre Miller was beautifully orchestrating the Wizards offense.

With the Wizards up 88-87 with under 17 seconds remaining, Andre Drummond put in a circus shot and was fouled to give the Pistons a 1-point lead, but he missed his costless throw attempt. With the ball in their hands, the Wizards ran a play through Miller, who drove the lane and dished a pass to Kevin Seraphin for a two handed slam to give the Wizards a 1-point advantage again.

After Greg Monroe missed an 11-foot jumper, the Wizards recovered the ball and were fouled. DeJuan Blair missed his first costless throw, but made his second, giving the Wizards a 91-89 lead. With one second left and no timeouts, the Pistons handed the ball to D.J. Augustin who launched a halfcourt heave and missed it.

Despite a losing effort, Drummond was amazing, scoring 21 points on a perfect 9-for-9 from the field to go along with 7 rebounds and 3 blocks. Monroe put in 17 and snatched 10 boards. He went 7-of-10 from the field.

For the Wizards, Marcin Gortat finished with a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. John Wall scored a team-high 15 points, as Seraphin dropped in 14 and 8 off the bench. Miller dished out 11 assists in his 26 minutes.

The Wizards out-rebounded the Pistons 46-36. Both teams were sloppy, however, with Washington turning it over 21 times, and Detroit 18 times.

The Wizards will host Euroleague champions Maccabi Tel-Aviv on October 15. The Pistons will head to Charlotte to face the Hornets at the Time Warner Cable Arena on 15th as well.
