On Thursday night, the Utah Jazz held off a late rally by Milwaukee to grab a 101-99 victory, snapping a four-game road losing streak and handing the Bucks their sixth loss in seven games at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.

Utah came out strong and utilized the three-point shot, hitting 4-of-5, to build a 22-10 lead in the first quarter. Utah hit 10 of 21 in the first, while Milwaukee only shot subpar at 36 percent, as they trailed 26-16 at the end of the period.

The Jazz continued to rely on the three in the second, as they hit two more (7-of-10) for a 16-point cushion, 35-19, but the Bucks went on a 10-0 run to get back into the game, 35-31, and outscored the Jazz in the quarter, 31-27. The bench played a crucial role, as Jared Dudley, O.J. Mayo, and Johnny O’Bryant combined for 26 points on 12-of-16 shooting. Meanwhile, the Jazz were playing well down low, as center Enes Kanter, who averaged 14 points and seven rebounds per game, had 12 and 12 in the first half alone, while backup Rudy Gobert accumulated 10 points and eight rebounds. Dante Exum hit four of the team’s nine three-pointers in the first half as they maintained a 53-47 advantage heading into halftime. Utah out-rebounded Milwaukee, 25-21, but surprisingly, despite the success of their centers, the Bucks owned the offensive advantage in the paint, as they outscored the Jazz, 26-16.

In the third, Milwaukee jumped out in front of the Jazz, 63-57, on a 16-4 run for their first lead of the game since 4-3. From there on, the Bucks continued the onslaught, extending their lead, 75-64. Brandon Knight scored 10 of his 16 points in the third, and Utah had ten turnovers in the quarter that lead to 15 Bucks points. In fact, with 2:14 remaining the Bucks scored 27 points off 19 turnovers while Milwaukee committed just six turnovers for three points. Yet, Utah was hanging around, as they continued to hit threes and convert at the free-throw line and was only down 79-76 as the final period began.

The Jazz had one more run left in them and kept the Bucks from running away with the game, as they retook the lead, 93-91, with 5:10 remaining. Milwaukee should have been up by a lot more, but the Jazz were relentless as they continuously went to the charity stripe, converting 12 of 13 in the fourth quarter alone. It looked like the Jazz would take the game, as they went up, 101-92, with 2:30 remaining, but Dudley hit a three with 1:29 to make it 101-99. With under ten seconds, Dudley had an open look at a three and the ball rattled in and out but ricocheted off the knee of Exum to give them the last shot with 7.1 remaining. Mayo caught the inbounds pass and then passed the ball to Brandon Knight at the top of the  key for an open shot, but it hit the back of the rim and Utah hung on to win.

Despite outscoring Utah 32-11 off turnovers and 54-30 in the paint, the Jazz won the rebounding matchup, 43-40, and hit 14 three pointers compared to just five for Milwaukee. The Jazz also made 23 of 28 free throws, while the Bucks were 10 of 12.

Gordon Hayward led all scorers with 24 points, while Kanter totaled 23 points and 16 rebounds, and Gobert played a big role with 14 points and 10 boards.

For Milwaukee, Knight and Dudley both had 16, and Giannis Antetokounmpo had 13 to go with six rebounds and five assists.

Milwaukee will host the Detroit Pistons Saturday at 7:30 PM EST, while the Utah Jazz will host the Brooklyn Nets at 9 PM EST.
