The Washington Wizards held a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter over the Indiana Pacers, but crumbled down the stretch and lost their fourth-straight game on a George Hill game-winning layup with 2.7 seconds remaining in regulation. The Pacers snapped their six-game losing streak and are tied with the Boston Celtics for the eight seed in the Eastern Conference.

John Wall was spectacular tonight as he scored a season-high 34 points on 11-of-21 shooting, including 10-of-11 from the free throw line. Wall also added six assists, four rebounds, and two steals. The only other Wizards who seemed to follow Wall’s lead was Marcin Gortat who scored added 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting, while grabbing seven rebounds and blocking two shots.

Washington suffered a huge loss tonight as Bradley Beal sprained his right ankle 11 minutes into the first quarter finishing the game with five points and a couple of assists. This isn’t the first time Beal has missed time as he dealt with a stress reaction in his leg that caused him to eight games.

Pacers guard George Hill was equally effective as John Wall as he scored 29 points on 12-of-24 shooting, including nine assists and seven rebounds. Hill scored 12 points in the final 4:18 of the game, including the game-winning layup. Including Hill, the Pacers had six players in double-figure scoring. C.J. Miles had 16 points, Solomon Hill added 13 points and six rebounds, C.J. Watson and Damjan Rudez came off the bench with 11 points apiece, and David West recorded a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.

John Wall scored 17 fourth quarter points, including eight-straight to start the quarter. With 6:46 left in regulation Wall knocked down a mid-range jumper to give the Wizards a 90-80 lead. The Pacers called a timeout after that jumper, and from that point on Indiana went on a 23-11 run to finish the game. Washington’s defense was relaxed and they continued to give up quick buckets at the rim. On the offensive end the ball stopped moving and nobody besides John Wall seemed willing to take shots which led to careless turnovers and scoreless possessions.

The Wizards were down 101-98 with 19 seconds left and it seemed inevitable they would lose. However, John Wall gave Wizards fans a glimpse of hope as he drained a three-pointer with 11 seconds remaining to tie the game at 101. It was short-lived as George Hill retrieved the ball out of bounds and jetted towards the basket for an uncontested layup.

Washington had two separate double-digit leads in both halves, and each time they gave it away in a blink of an eye. This team has shown a lack of energy and focus for a couple months now, it’s not what you want to see as the regular season is almost over and the playoffs are approaching.

The Indiana Pacers will play the Milwaukee Bucks tomorrow night on the road at 8:00 PM EST. The Washington Wizards will stay home and face the Charlotte Hornets Friday night at 7:00 PM EST.
