Free agency starts in a few hours for the NBA. There are many big-name free agents out there and many are actually looking for a new home. The Dallas Mavericks made the playoffs last year but need a big time move to contend with the best teams in basketball. These are the three things that Dallas needs to do this offseason to help be a contender for a championship next season.

1. The Mavs need to sign a solid big to help Dirk Nowitzki. Dirk will always be the first option on offense, but there has to be someone to give him a break. He won’t always be dominant and is not getting any younger. Dallas is reportedly looking at LaMarcus Aldridge and DeAndre Jordan as options to come in. Either of those players would be a tremendous help for Dirk so he can go out and try to win another title. Other names like Greg Monroe, Omer Asik, Robin Lopez, and Thaddeus Young should all be possible targets as well. The Mavericks will go all out to get Clippers center DeAndre Jordan especially, and he is the main target as well.

2. Dallas also needs to sign a starter worthy point guard and shooting guard. After striking out with Rajon Rondo, the Mavs need a guard that can stick around and produce for the foreseeable future. Patrick Beverley has been a name that the Mavs have been looking at. He is a great defender, which is also a young piece. Sharpshooter Danny Green and defensive stopper Iman Shumpurt have also drawn interest from the Mavericks. Blazers guard Wesley Matthews has been a name thrown in the mix also. It’s also rumored that if Dwyane Wade leaves Miami, Dallas could be one of the teams he is interested in. But Patrick Beverley and the likes of Wesley Matthews could be the most realistic options.

3. Finally, the Mavericks need to try to keep some of their players. Tyson Chandler, Monta Ellis, and Al-Farouq Aminu. Ellis is almost a given to leave, but Dallas should at least shoot him an offer first before he signs elsewhere. Aminu has been a growing name in the free agency market because of his defensive capabilities and performing well last season. He would be a smart keep to come in behind Chandler Parsons. If Dallas does not get DeAndre Jordan, then expect the Mavericks to do all in their power to sign Tyson Chandler to another deal.

After a 50-32 season a year ago, the 2011 NBA champions need a spark to get back in championship competition. Their star veteran Dirk Nowitzki isn’t getting any younger and needs more help nowadays. If Dallas is able to sign Beverley, Matthews, and Jordan then they can make a run for a top-four seed in the Western Conference. If they are unable to get any of the key free agents, then they could be in for a disappointing season.
