Former NBA Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard has agreed upon the framework of a new maximum contract with the San Antonio Spurs that could be worth in excess of $90 million as reported by Adrian Wojnarowski.

"I have every intention of signing with the San Antonio Spurs," Leonard said in a statement. "There are details in the contract which need to be worked out with the organization. I am confident that this will be accomplished."

While Gregg Popovich might have been sleeping and counting sheep, Spurs officials reached out to Kawhi Leonard shortly after 12:00 AM ET Wednesday, July 1.

Now that Kawhi Leonard's contract has been taken care of it seems as all the Spurs attention will now shift towards their recruiting meeting with LaMarcus Aldridge Wednesday morning in Los Angeles. Kawhi Leonard will join Gregg Popovich, Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and general manager R.C Buford during their breakfast meeting with the All-Star power forward.

Locking up Kawhi Leonard was priority number one for the San Antonio Spurs as he has developed into one of the best young players in the league and a lockdown defender. With the Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker era coming to a close in the near future it was vital for the Spurs to keep their young budding star in black and silver for the foreseeable future.

The Spurs were a much better team in the second half of the season last year in large part due to Leonard's return to the starting lineup. He showed on the brightest of stages in the 2014 NBA Finals how much of a promising future he has in the NBA as he went toe to toe with the best basketball player in the world, LeBron James.

Kawhi Leonard has turned into one of the premier defenders in the league and is highly versatile offensively with his long wingspan and atheleticism. He could very well be the face of the franchise if he continues his developmental progress whenever Tim Duncan decides to call it a career.

Leonard's scoring, rebounding and steals per game averages have increased every season, as he averaged 16.5 points, 7.2 rebounds and 2.3 steals this past season.
