After registering major interest in Monta Ellis since the start of free agency, the Indiana Pacers have finally landed the 29-year-old scoring guard.

Ellis and the Pacers have agreed upon a four-year, $44 million deal with a player option after the third year, reports Marc Stein of ESPN.

Headed into the 12th season of his career, Ellis is the perfect fit for the Pacers. In all the years he has been in the NBA, Ellis has been known for his sufficient scoring, and he also possesses the ability to play make and ball handle.

Indiana’s main struggle over the last few years has been their offense. Last season, Indiana was ranked 24th in points per game and 23rd in offensive efficiency. Adding Ellis to the equation immediately helps the team in those categories.

Ellis has a career average of 19.3 points and 4.8 assists. Last season alone, he led the Dallas Mavericks in scoring with 18.9 points per game. The beauty of having someone like Ellis is that he will take a lot of pressure off George Hill and Paul George when it comes to play making and ball handling.

Ellis has the quickness to break down defenses and has the ability to create for others by penetrating. Even though scoring is his main entrée, Ellis can become Indiana’s main ball handler if needed.

Of course his scoring takes pressure off George as well, as he could either carry the scoring load if George is having an off night or become a second option on offense alongside George. Additionally, Indiana wants to play faster and smaller this season. Ellis will be the perfect fit for that system since he has played in an up-tempo offense as a member of the Golden State Warriors.

What makes this deal even sweeter is that Ellis didn’t take too much money to join the team. In fact, Ellis turned down a four-year, $48 million offer from the Sacramento Kings to help the Pacers regain relevance in the East for less money.

With Ellis on board, would this change David West’s mind? According to reports, West is looking to go to a contending team to play for less money. He doesn’t see Indiana as a contender, but maybe this move for Ellis could change his thought process.

Either way, the Pacers made a magnificent signing, and Ellis is an impeccable fit for this team.
