Toronto Raptors free agent wingman Landry Fields is expected to miss five months after undergoing hip surgery, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports.

Fields' surgery is meant to repair a labral tear of the hip and his five-month timetable could keep him out until early February.

This puts an enormous dent in Fields’ free agency stock. The five-year man out of Stanford was already having difficulties finding a new contract, and with this injury, he may spend most of the year without a team.

Fields’ role with the Raptors has significantly diminished over the past two seasons. After playing 51 games and earning 22 starts during the 2012-2013 season, Fields has gathered just 56 games with 11 starts the last two years. His minutes also dropped from 20.3 to 10.7 to 8.3 per contest this past season.

The 27-year old is mainly known for his exceptional perimeter defense but is a less than average offensive player.

Fields’ best years came as a member of the New York Knicks where he averaged 9.7 points and 6.4 rebounds per outing during his rookie campaign, playing in all 82 games and receiving 81 starts. His sophomore year was quite good too, as he averaged 8.8 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 1.2 steals.

However, as a free agent, he signed with the Raptors, and due to the depth at the wing position, Fields was unable to find steady minutes off the bench.

Now with this current injury, it’s indefinite whether Fields will ultimately find a new home or not. Being sidelined until at least February, Fields would have missed more than half the season. Perhaps a championship caliber team could use his services after the All-Star break once he has fully recovered from the injury.

In the meantime, Fields will remain a free agent while rehabbing from this unfortunate, severe injury.
