Tyler Murphy accounted for 191 of Boston College's 452 rushing yards as the Eagles ran to a 37-31 upset over the USC Trojans. USC had the opposite type of game running the ball with only 20 yards on the ground as a team. It was an emotional game for Boston College, as they celebrated the legacy left behind from Welles Crowther. Crowther is credited with saving at least a dozen lives on 9/11.

The game started out with both offenses struggling to move the ball, but USC broke that trend on their third drive. Alex Howell's punt went a meager 35 yards and was returned to the Boston College 38 yard line. Six plays later, Cody Kessler hit a wide open George Farmer for the 8 yard touchdown to give USC a 7-0 lead.

USC would extend their lead after another short punt by Howell was returned 11 yards to the Boston College 33 yard line. However, USC managed to move backwards a yard and settled for a 52 yard field goal from Andre Heidari to make it 10-0.

Boston College came back and was in business after Myles Willis ran for a 52 yard gain before being pushed out of bounds at the USC 26. A heavy dose of running led to Boston College's first score when Tyler Rouse got the pitch from Murphy for the four yard run. Joey Launceford's extra point was wide left and USC led 10-6.

A 50 yard kickoff return by Adoree' Jackson set USC up with good field postion. On third and 12, Kessler hit Javorius "Buck" Allen on a little screen pass that he took 51 yards to the house to make it 17-6.

BC came right back with a 3 yard run by Jon Hilliman. It would be another three drives for BC, but they would take their first lead of the game when Murphy gave a soft pitch to Sherman Alston on an end around. Alston used his speed to get around the USC defenders before being tackled into the end zone for a 54 yard touchdown run. BC would take their 20-17 lead into halftime.

Both defenses stiffened in the third quarter, though Boston College did get a touchdown from Hilliman from a yard out to extend their lead to 27-17 at the end of three quarters.

USC still could not breakdown the BC defense on their first drive of the fourth quarter. Joey Launceford's 25 yard field goal made it 30-17 Eagles with seven and a half minutes remaining.

USC finally put points on the board with a 10 yard pass from Kessler to Nelson Agholor. However, Tyler Murphy capped a great rushing game for the Eagles with a perfect read.

On second and four, the call was a read-option, which Murphy sold perfectly by getting the defensive players collapse to the running back. Murphy ran to the edge, made one cut up field, and was gone for the 66 yard touchdown.

USC did get a 14 yard touchdown pass from Kessler to Darreus Rodgers to make it 37-31, but the onside kick failed and BC was able to run the clock out.

Kessler had a good performance in the loss. He went 31 of 41 for 317 yards and 4 touchdowns with no turnovers. Buck Allen led the team in rushing with 31 yards on 15 carries. Allen was also the team's leading receiver with 9 catches for 118 yards and a touchdown. Nelson Agholor had 9 catches for 64 yards and a touchdown.

Tyler Murphy had a very poor night passing, but he made up for it with his feet. He went 5 of 13 for 54 yards and an interception. However, he ran for 191 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. Myles Willis had 89 yards on 9 carries while Jon Hilliman contributed 89 yards and 2 touchdowns on 19 carries.

Shakim Phillips was the leading receiver with 1 catch for 17 yards. Dan Crimmins also had one catch, but for 14 yards.

USC (2-1, 0-1) has a bye before facing Oregon State (2-0) on Septebmer 27. Boston College (2-1, 0-1) will face Maine, an FCS opponent, next week at home.
