Boise State quarterback Grant Hedrick threw four interceptions and running back Jay Ajayi fumbled twice, and the Air Force Falcons handed the Broncos their worst ever loss in Mountain West Conference play, delivering a 28-14 loss to a lackluster BSU team.

Hedrick and the Broncos turned the ball over on three of their of their first four possessions and allowed the Falcons to get a 14-0 jump. Boise did not score any points until the fourth quarter after Hedrick was pulled in favor of freshman Ryan Finley, who led the Broncos to two late touchdowns.

Air Force was fabulous on defense. Along with picking off Hedrick four times, the Falcons D forced two fumbles and intercepted a Finley offering with just over two minutes remaining. Safety Weston Steelhammer secured three picks of his own for Air Force.

Falcons signal caller Kale Pearson executed his team’s option attack to perfection and rushed for a career-high 127 yards and one touchdown. He threw for another score as he connected with Garrett Brown in the first quarter to give AFA a 7-0 lead. Pearson added a five-yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter to extend the Falcons’ lead to 14-0. Air Force kicker Will Conant knocked in a 25-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to make it a 17-0 bulge at intermission.

Hedrick struggled throughout the night, repeatedly failing to make the correct reads and often throwing into tight coverage. After a long punt return by Shane Williams-Rhodes gave the Broncos the ball at the Air Force 15 yard line, Hedrick promptly threw the ball directly to Steelhammer on the first play of the drive.

On the night, Boise State outgained Air Force in total yards 467 to 335, but their seven turnovers proved too much to overcome. The Broncos also had 9 penalties for 80 yards.

As Boise State, now 3-2 (1-1) looks forward to its next contest, October 4 at Nevada, will Hedrick still find himself under center, or will Finley get an opportunity to play?

Air Force, 3-1 (1-1), will welcome Navy to Falcon Stadium next Saturday in a battle of the top two service academies.
