Coming into tonight, the Western Michigan Broncos hadn't beaten the Michigan State Spartans in 96 years, and that streak will continue.

Mark Dantonio's Spartans came away with a 37-24 win against the Broncos of Western Michigan at Waldo Stadium in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

It was a 7-7 game with 8:56 remaining in the first quarter following a touchdown on a 101-yard kickoff return by Darius Phillips, but the Spartans then outscored the Broncos 20-3 in the rest of the first half, a run that would carry them to their 10th straight win against Western.

Michigan State's freshman running back Madre London scored the first two touchdowns for the Spartans in the first quarter, the first two of his collegiate career.

The Spartans struggled on both sides of the ball in the second half, as the Broncos outscored them 14-10. Had the Broncos made the most of their opportunities in the first half this could have been a very close game.

Senior quarterback Connor Cook struggled at times connecting with his inexperienced receiving core, going just 15-for-31 for 256 yards and two touchdowns.

The Spartans three-man running back rotation including LJ Scott, Madre London and Gerald Holmes combined for 34 carries and 190 rushing yards. Wide receiver Aaron Burbridge pulled in four catches for 114 yards, and tight end Josiah Price added 49 yards on three receptions.

Michigan State senior wide receiver DeAnthony Arnett hauled in a touchdown as well, his first since he was a freshman back in 2011.

"It's our first game. We all have our struggles," Arnett said. "Next week, we'll come out more focused and more prepared."

Zach Terrell played very well for Western Michigan and outplayed a Heisman candidate in Cook. The junior quarterback went 33-for-50 for 365 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. His skilled receivers, Corey Davis (154 yards) and Daniel BravermanTerrell and company ate up the Spartans young and shaky secondary.

Thanks to a 27-point first half, the Spartans were able to come away with the win.

"There's a team over there that's elite with the green helmet. There's a team over here with a brown helmet," Western Michigan head coach P.J. Fleck said. "You figure three or four plays and people would be talking we're the fifth team in the country now. But that's football. You can't play could've, would've, should've."

Michigan State (1-0) takes on the number seven ranked Oregon Ducks at home next week, and their defense needs a lot of improvement to beat the Ducks deadly offensive attack.

Western Michigan (0-1) was a few plays away from this being a much diff rent, closer game. They take on Georgia Southern next week.
