49ers linebacker Aldon Smith has been sentenced to 12 days of jail time for DUI and gun charges. Smith has been credited for 1 day of jail time, and will serve the remaining 11 days working with the work crew on Mondays, starting July 28th. Aldon Smith can face a fine from the 49ers organization for the missed days of work. The good news for Aldon is he had 3 weapons felonies reduced to to misdemeanors.

Smith's jailtime will finish a week prior to the 49ers Monday night game against the St. Louis Rams in Week 6. Smith is in the clear from a legal standpoint, by serving his time. He also is on a 3-year probation from owning guns or ammunition. The NFL can still suspend Smith, however, if they choose to do so for violation of the personal conduct code. Smith will be missing a day a week of practice for the beginning of the season, which could affect the team. If the NFL decides to get involved, it coul really affect the team with suspensions.

This sentence comes at a "best case" outcome for the 49ers. Limited carry-over to the season (prior to NFL involvement), ability to still be involved in team operations with only missing 1 day per week, and the timing of this situation. Thankfully for the 49ers this happened early enough that it shouldn't affect the team too much and if the NFL gets involved, suspensions should be minor.
