The Dallas Cowboys have signed Pro Bowl left tackle Tyron Smith to an 8-year $98 million contract extension with $40 million guaranteed. Tyron Smith has flourished during his first 3 years with the Cowboys and has been a model of consistency on the offensive line.

Jerry Jones and the Cowboys have made it a priority to building an elite offensive line for years to come to protect Tony Romo in addition to whomever takes over the quarterback reins after him. Extending Tyron Smith’s contract, who at only 23 years of age is already one of the top offensive lineman in the league, to remain in Dallas only solidifies that concept.

"We talk about building a program and building a football team and he was the first player that we took three years ago in that draft," coach Jason Garrett said. "He's just been everything we've wanted to build this program and this team around. He was really a young player, who we put in really on minute one of day one and he's everything that we thought he would be, both physically, intangibly and just as a person. His work ethic is fantastic. His mental and physical toughness are as good as I've been around. He just continues to grow and develop as a player. Technically he's getting better. He's getting bigger and stronger. And he's just tough, competitive. He's what you want on your football team at a really, really important position."

Tyron Smith has done a tremendous of protecting Tony Romo’s blind side over the last three seasons and will only be 32 years old when his contract expires. With all the struggles and concerns with the Cowboys on the defensive end, they will have to rely on their offensive line as well as their running game in order to keep the defense off the field as much as possible.

With Tyron Smith’s contract now a thing of the past, the Cowboys will look at signing Pro Bowl wide receiver Dez Bryant to a new long-term deal. Smith and Bryant have been the Cowboys two main priorities in getting new contract extensions signed. One down one to go.
