Tony Romo enters the 2014 season coming off a season ending back injury that saw him sidelined for a decisive week 17 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles at the end of the 2013 season. Many football fans question Tony Romo’s football decisions on the field and often ask if he has the “clutch gene”, but seldom has anyone ever questioned Romo’s toughness. Before missing the last game of the season, Romo found a way to orchestrate a game winning drive against the Washington Redskins that he himself capped off with a fourth down touchdown pass to DeMarco Murray. Even with the heroics Romo has conjured up in seasons past, the back surgery in the offseason has to give Cowboy fans plenty to fret about preseason.

Romo is slated to start the Dallas Cowboys second preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens Saturday evening. This game will stand as Romo’s first live action test of the year against a team that loves to hit the opposing quarterback. Romo has proven to be a polarizing figure since the Eastern Illinois University alumni took the Cowboys’ starting job from Drew Bledsoe. The game will provide Romo a stage to either quell the doubts or add fuel to sports radio host first segments nationwide. Romo will be looking not only to prove the doubters wrong, but also to finally push Dallas above the 8-8 mark and back into playoff contention.

The most important thing to look for in Romo’s game Saturday evening will be his elusiveness in the pocket. Romo’s ability to escape the pocket and find receivers breaking lose down the field has been a trademark play for the Cowboys’ offense the last several seasons. Romo’s comfort level with the starting receivers will also be an interesting look during the game. Romo has enjoyed success in previous seasons finding a safe spot with both wide receiver Dez Bryant and safety blanket tight end Jason Witten. All eyes will be on Romo Saturday to see if the man who has fought back against the odds his whole career can bounce back one more time to lead America’s Team back to the playoffs.
