Gerald McCoy has reached a contract extension with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Buccaneers will give McCoy seven years at around 100 million dollars also, 51 million of that is guaranteed. It's a great move by the Buccaneers by signing him up long term.  They wanted to get this done earlier in the preseason but, ultimately couldn't get it done until now. He's deserving of this contract extension. According to Jason La Canfora,"That gives McCoy an average salary of nearly $14 million and will make him the highest-paid defensive tackle in league history." When people talk about the 2010 draft and defensive tackles, Ndamukong Suh is the first to be mentioned. Gerald McCoy often doesn't get mentioned. He's actually one of the best at what he does.

Over the past seasons, McCoy has led the Tampa Bay defense. With 56 games played he has 136 tackles. To go along with those tackles, McCoy has 20 1/2 sacks and three forced fumbles in those games. He's also a pro bowler and an all pro. He's the leader and heart and soul of the stifling Bucs defense. Also, he provides the energy.

The general manager of the Buccaneers, Jason Licht, released a statement on McCoy and the signing "From the moment Lovie and I arrived here, we knew it was vital for us to keep Gerald in Tampa Bay long-term as one of the cornerstones of our franchise," Bucs general manager Jason Licht said in a statement from the team. "... We are happy to reward someone that has a rare work ethic, which not only makes him an elite player, but serves as an example for our entire team."
