The Baltimore Ravens had the ball on offense with under a minute left in the game with a final chance to drive 80 yards down the field for a score and win the game. Everything looked well for the Ravens as Joe Flacco threw the ball down the field to wide receiver Steve Smith for an 80 yard touchdown reception. Not so fast.

The pass play was called back for offensive pass interference and what looked like a game winning touchdown ended in defeat for the Ravens as the team lost to the Cincinnati Bengals 27-24.

Lately, it has seemed like every time the Ravens have played the Bengals, the Bengals have found a way to escape with a win or at least make things interesting.

In the first meeting between the Ravens and the Bengals in the 2013 regular season, Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton threw a hail Mary pass on the Bengals last play of regulation as the ball was tipped in the air in the red zone Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green caught to extend the game to overtime. The Ravens would eventually win that game.

In week 1 of this 2014 season, Dalton connected on a pass play for 77 yards ending in a touchdown by Green on a play where the ball was tipped in the air again which led to a Bengals victory.

Fast forward to week 8 and the Ravens had magic of their own in store for the Bengals with Smith but a penalty aided the Bengals to pull out the win.

“You got to admit, offensive pass interference, that’s a pretty [gutsy] call to call,” Ravens outside linebacker Terrell Suggs noted after the game via Baltimoreravens.com “That’s a pretty [gutsy] call considering the situation.”

The Ravens had a lot of opportunities to win the game against the Bengals starting with their first drive of the game where the Ravens failed to convert on fourth down inside the Bengals five yard line by a dropped pass from Ravens wide receiver Kamar Aiken in red zone.

The Ravens had another chance on the Bengals second to last possession of the game where Ravens rookie safety Terrence Brooks made a mistake in coverage on third and 10 against Bengals at mid field as Bengals wide receiver Mohamed Sanu capitalized on a drive which allowed the Bengals to score a touchdown to take the lead.

The Ravens fall to 5-3 on the season and the Bengals improve to 4-2-1 to claim first place in the AFC North. Despite the frustrating loss for the Ravens, Suggs knows the Ravens have another important game to look forward to in week 9 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

“We’re over it,” Suggs noted via Baltimoreravens.com. “We’re on to Pittsburgh.”

The Ravens still have a legitimate shot at the playoffs. At the same time, the Ravens can longer leave opportunities on the field the way they did against the Bengals.
