Two weeks ago the San Francisco 49ers announced that they were hiring Jim Tomsula as Head Coach. Today they announced that they  will be promoting QB Coach George Patrick "Geep" Chryst to Offensive Coordinator. Chryst has been the Quarterbacks Coach for the 49ers since 2011. Chryst had previously been an Offensive Coordinator for the San Diego Chargers from 1999-2000. Former 49ers Coach Jim Harbaugh was the Quarterback for the Chargers in 1999.

The 49ers will need all of the help that they can get on offense. In 2014 they averaged 136 yards per game (4th overall) rushing the ball. However, they averaged only 191.4 yards per game passing (30th overall), and a modest 19.1 points per game (25th overall). Frank Gore (RB), Michael Crabtree (WR), and Mike Lupati (G) are unrestricted free agents.

San Francisco was interested in Lane Kiffin, but he ultimately decided to stay at the University of Alabama. They interviewed Adam Gase, but he chose to take the same job with the Chicago Bears.

Chryst had previous stops in Chicago, San Diego, Arizona, and Carolina before coming to the 49ers in 2011. During his time in San Diego, the Chargers had the fifth-fewest yards and sixth-fewest points in the NFL.

Geep Chryst played college football at Princeton University. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in History from Princeton as well as a Master's Degree in Educational Administration from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
