In a move that surprised hardly anyone, the Detroit Lions parted ways with running back Reggie Bush. The former Heisman trophy winner signed with the Detroit Lions as a free agent in 2013. Bush was limited in 2014 due to reoccurring injuries, and little effect when he was on the field. The move, however, comes as a cap clearing casualty as the Lions look to free up funds to re-sing pending free agent defensive tackle Ndamukoung Suh.

In his first season with the Lions, 2013, Bush was effective in both the running game and passing game. He gobbled up 1,006 yards on the ground and had 54 catches for a total of 506 yards receiving. Those numbers went down drastically in 2014 as Bush was only "healthy" enough to play in 11 games. Of those 11 games, he had a pedestrian 297 yards rushing and 253 yards receiving.

With the emergence of Joique Bell and receiving threat Theo Riddick, the Lions were poised to make a move with Bush. Lions GM Martin Mayhew was not reassuring when asked about the status of Bush, last week at the NFL Scouting Combine. “When you have a guy like Theo Riddick who can make a difference in the passing game, that brings value to your team," Mayhew told the Detroit Free Press. "Joique Bell, being a between-the-tackles runner for us is big and he does a good job catching balls out of the backfield as well. I like guys that are versatile, but you’ve got to have a guy who can run between the tackles and you’ve got to have a playmaker who can do some stuff in space."

Bush was due a $3.25 million base salary in 2015. The Lions created another $1.7 million in cap room by cutting the soon to be 30-year-old Bush.
