The San Diego Chargers have signed free agent wide receiver Jacoby Jones to a two-year deal according to Adam Schefter and other sources, though the amount has not been reported yet. Jones was released in February by the Baltimore Ravens after a season that Ravens staff and owners thought was disappointing. Even though Jones made some mistakes that inevitably cost the Ravens, he still ranked second among kickoff returners, averaging 30.6 yards per return.

Jones was drafted in the third round of the 2007 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans with the 73rd overall pick. He played for the Texans until the end of the 2011 season when the Texans released him, and in the years he spent with them, Jones played as a receiver and returner in 75 total games. Jones had 127 receptions in 215 targets and total receiving yards of 1,741 in five seasons.

In 2012, Jones was a part of the Ravens team that won the Super Bowl. In that game, Jones broke the NFL records for longest kickoff return in a Super Bowl and longest play in a Super Bowl with his 108-yard kickoff return. He also set the record for most all-purpose yards in a Super Bowl with 287 yards. Jones was also named to the 2012 Pro Bowl as one of six Ravens players named to the team.

In 2014, the Chargers dealt with injuries on both offense and defense, including wide receiver Keenan Allen, who missed the last games of the season. Along with injuries at the wide receiver position, the Chargers dealt with five different starting centers as well as injuries on defense. The last few seasons, since the departure of veteran wide receiver Vincent Jackson as well the injury to Vincent Brown and, later, the decision to waive him, the Chargers have struggled to find a breakout play-maker to help them at the receiver position. Jones should not only add to the depth at the wide receiver position, but he should also bring talent and the ability to make plays, which is something the Chargers desperately need.

Head coach Mike McCoy and the Chargers' coaching staff saw how Jones could help them when they played the Ravens on the road and came back from behind to win the game 34-33. Even though special teams tried to keep the ball away from Jones, when he got the ball, he made them pay for it. Now, he is a talented and skilled player who can add that to the Chargers' roster as they try to make the playoffs for the second time in three years.
