The Arizona Cardinals have made NFL history Monday night. The have signed Jen Welter to help coach the inside linebackers during training camp and the pre season. She will become the first women to have a coaching position of any kind in NFL history.

While this likely will not be a long-term thing, it will have the potential to help get jobs for other women in other major sports leagues.

Previously she has played for the Texas Revolution of the Indoor Football League. She also made history then becoming the first female to play a non-kicker position in any men's football league. After playing for the Revolution, she became a coach for them becoming the first female to coach in a men's football league.

After being the star rugby player at Boston College, she played with the Dallas Diamonds of the Women's Football Alliance. She helped the Diamonds to four league championships. She also won two gold medals playing for the United States Women's football team at the world championships.

Cards coach Bruce Arians talked about the move saying:

Coaching is nothing more than teachingOne thing I have learned from players is, ‘How are you going to make me better? If you can make me better, I don’t care if you’re the Green Hornet, man, I’ll listen.’ I really believe she’ll have a great opportunity with this internship through training camp to open some doors for her.”

It was reported that Welter's name was given to Arians by the current coach of the Revolution. Arians also reportedly talked with other coaches and they said that in no way would this move be a distraction to the team.

This is for sure a big history making move for the NFL. Welter is the second female hired by the NFL this year. Earlier this year, Sarah Thomas was hired as a full time official.

Welter took to social media to share her joy, specifically on Facebook she wrote, "I'm honored to be part of the #BIRDGANG! Love the #footballfamily here with the #ArizonaCardinals #NFL..."

This is a big move by an NFL franchise and hopefully it will give more females hoping to be coaches a chance to do what they love.
