Baltimore Ravens outside linebacker Elvis Dumervil has missed the last couple of practices since Friday with tendonitis in his Achilles according to the Baltimore Sun. It isn't expected to be serious with the proper treatment. Most likely the Ravens will play it safe and let go maybe later in the second week of training camp.

Even though Dumervil's injury isn't serious, it does bring a closer look to the Ravens depth at outside linebacker. Dumervil in his two seasons with the Ravens, has 116 tackles, 26.5 sacks, four forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. Dumervil during the 2014 season set the Ravens all-time regular season sack record with 17. If Dumervil were to ever go down with an injury for a long period of time, the Ravens are in trouble.

Right now overall, the Ravens have a pretty good roster. They are not elite everywhere, but they hold their own pretty well at every position from quarterback Joe Flacco to punter Sam Koch. However, losing Dumervil would almost destroy the Ravens chances at a deep playoff run.

The Ravens can't rely on outside linebacker Terrell Suggs to do all of the dirty work in the pass rushing department. Suggs would be the only proven outside linebacker with pass rushing abilities on the roster if Dumervil is ever out and vice versa. The Ravens did draft rookie outside linebacker Za'Darius Smith who will fill the hole that former Ravens outside linebacker Pernell McPhee played in his time with the team. But it is unrealistic to expect a rookie to hold his own right off the bat.

Relying on outside linebacker Courtney Upshaw isn't realistic either as he is strictly a run defender. Upshaw sets the edge on the outside for containment against running backs or end around players involving wide receivers. Anything the Ravens get out of Upshaw in the sack department is gravy.

So at the end of the day, in any event Dumervil is out for a period of time, the Ravens would have to rely on blitzing more often despite the fact that defensive coordinator Dean Pees runs a bit of a conservative approach in terms of blitzing from time to time.

The Ravens right now are relying on their best pass rushers in Dumervil and Suggs to get to the opposing quarterback and they are both 31 and 32 years old respectively. Age isn't anything but a number with those two players as they led the NFL last season in combined sacks with 29. But at the same time, the Ravens need to find pass rushing depth as soon as possible.
