Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay made some recent comments to ESPN that would give Colts fans a reason for relief. Irsay indicated to ESPN that the Colts and T.Y. Hilton should be able to get an agreement on a new contract before Labor Day. There hasn't been anything major between the Colts organization and T.Y. Hilton's camp in negotiations, but the negotiations have started again.

Jim Irsay told ESPN this about contract negotiations with T.Y. Hilton:

"...can’t see why we can’t get something done before Labor Day with T.Y. [Hilton].”

T.Y. Hilton's future with the team has been the biggest question from the media and fans since the NFL Draft. Indianapolis didn't do anyone any favors when they selected Phillip Dorsett in the first round of the draft, but that shouldn't change Hilton's future with the Colts.

The good news for the Colts is that Hilton indicated that both sides have resumed contract negotiations. Hilton made comments to the media at Colts camp in Anderson, Indiana that would suggest this. T.Y. Hilton is set to have his four year rookie deal expire after this season. Hilton views himself as a top receiver in the league, so he is expecting to get paid like one.

The wideout said this when asked about the contract negotiations between his agent and the Colts:

“That’s between my agent and the Colts, whatever they decide,” Hilton said. “I’m just out here having fun with my teammates and just continuing to get better. You want to get it out of the way, but there’s nothing I can do. I’m just going out there playing, controlling what I can control.”

Hilton has stated on various occasions that he would like to remain a member of the Indianapolis Colts for the future. But it is unknown how serious Hilton is about leaving the team if the Colts don't give him the exact offer that he wants. It doesn't sound like Hilton will be giving Indianapolis a hometown discount, but Indianapolis could get creative to re-sign him, along with the other key players that are set to have their contracts expire.

Dez Bryant and Demaryius Thomas both signed $70 million, 5 year deals this summer. Hilton believes that he is in the same category as those two top tier receivers. Indianapolis would most likely not be willing to pay Hilton that much money, but they would most likely be willing to pay over $10 million a season for him.

T.Y. Hilton told the media this after Bryant and Thomas signed their new contracts:

“I saw that they just set the bar,” Hilton said. “For me, just go out there and have fun. I’m not Dez or Demaryius, I’m T.Y., so I’m just going to continue to be me.”

T.Y. Hilton is set to make $1.5 million in the upcoming season. In all likelihood, Hilton won't be getting the type of money that Dez Bryant or Demaryius Thomas are set to make, but he will be getting a massive pay increase. Making the Pro-Bowl last season should have basically solidified this, which it most likely will.

Drew Rosenthaus (T.Y. Hilton's agent) was in attendance for Colts camp on August 4th. Rosenthaus stated T.Y. Hilton's interest in staying with the Indianapolis Colts for the remainder of his career. Rosenthaus stated that there is nothing 'iminent' between Hilton's camp and the Colts, but he is optimistic that both sides will reach a good deal soon.

Rosenthaus's comment to NFL Network about Hilton's future plans with the Colts:

“[T.Y. Hilton] wants to be here for his career.”

If there is one thing that's for sure, Drew Rosenthaus's clients get what they want. It's good to know that T.Y. Hilton wants to remain on the Colts for the future, especially since Rosenthaus is his agent. It's a good sign that both the Colts and Drew Rosenthaus believe that a deal is not only very possible, but that a deal could happen in the near future. It is important for the Cotls to retain Hilton, but it is also important for Hilton to stay with the Colts. There may not be much at this stage of the negotiations, but it appears that there could be a few breakthroughs in the near future.
